Aldi Addendum

   Yesterday evening, Sunday, my husband mentioned that I should go to Aldi and see the other pumpkin items he saw when he was there last week. I was going to go buy bottled water anyway, so Aldi's it was. I will not promise to never mention Aldi again because I know they have truly scrumptious gourmet foods throughout the holidays, particularly Christmas which is quickly on its way. This will however not be an ongoing series here at Honeycomb Cottage, its just that their selection of pumpkin groceries is well worth mentioning. So with a minimum of editorial comment I will give you a pictorial summary of what I saw this evening.

   Done with buying the water and few other items and on our way home. We live fairly close to the Aldi's we shop at but the ride home, especially if it is evening is always nice. We have deer in our neighborhood that roam freely and in large number.

Shortly after leaving the store we see this beautiful creature. It is near impossible to see but there is a large buck in those trees.

My three pumpkin items this trip.

Not too strong or spicy ~ just delicate and yummy!

Since I am posting this the next evening, Monday, I will add a few updates.

   Those pumpkins were large but the pickings were slim and picked over. I went back today and they had a new and full tote of beautiful large pumpkins of which seven of them now rest adorning my front porch and steps. A few more updates here. I did snag the Pumpkin Pizzelle's and Pumpkin Bread Mix while there today. Also, I discovered today the Pumpkin Ravioli is great with cinnamon sugar sprinkled on it. You could put butter on them and let it melt before sprinkling the cinnamon sugar on but there is no need to ~ they are GREAT. Prepared this way this Ravioli would be outstanding served with a good sage sausage, my choice is always Jimmy Dean, and apple cider ~ cold or mulled. I have a traditional Christmas breakfast. Thanksgiving however tends to be muffins and sausage, bagels and fruit or just oatmeal. I think this year it will be this Ravioli, sausage and cider. I may try a tweaked version of the serving suggestion on the bag for the next lunch or supper meal I want to make these. They recommend a Browned Butter Sauce using 1 stick of butter and 10 ~ 12 sage leaves, melting the butter, adding the sage leaves cooking on medium~low heat for 2 ~ 3 minutes just until the butter begins to brown, then remove, set aside and drizzle over Ravioli once prepared. The last update is that while there last night I missed a few items. I did not take piccies of them today, but I will list them for you.

Our Wedding Anniversary this year.

   Next year will be our 25th wedding anniversary, and it will be absolutely great. This year was great on a smaller scale. Jon and I love the water and while he likes good fish, it is my favorite food. Okay, I have others I really enjoy like seafood, curries, pumpkin, peach, apricot and good quality sausage comestibles, but when I dine out; it's something out of the water.

    I can't describe this little fish house diner without referring to a line in the movie Steel Magnolia's. If you saw that movie you might remember Truvy (Dolly Parton), saying about her son and his girlfriend, "Louie brought his new girlfriend over, and the nicest thing I can say about her is all her tattoos are spelled correctly.”  That line jumped in my head when I walked through the doors. The men must have ancestry from the seafaring pirates and their smuggling industry. They have a great little business there and they are very good at it. I was so pleased to find they were very nice and seemed to be passionate about the food they served. Jon and I agreed our meal was delicious. All of the fish is fresh, and I mean fresh. I highly recommend this little fish house to anyone going through town. I am inserting a YouTube video about this great little place we found. It is a good little video and I hope you watch it.

   I usually take pictures and do not have my picture taken. This is one Jon grabbed. It was quite sunny so that is as good as it gets.

   We had  the walleye sandwich with fries. I am a huge walleye fan and this sandwich was the best walleye I have ever had. The next time I am there I will order just the walleye meal, skip the bun. Although, that bun was very soft and full of fresh flavor. That was a pleasant surprise that was not expected. I am however not a big fan of french fries, but these were great. Yep, next time it is just the fish and chips for me. There will be a next time, we will go next year and I am sure more than once.

   Jon and I both love water. We have talked about living close to water since that evening at
Kemil Beach in the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore on Lake Michigan 24 years ago when he asked me to marry him. This is Lake Erie. Lake Erie has a much different feel to it than Lake Michigan. This lake has very little sandy beach area and is primarily rocky on its coast. But water, large bodies of water whether they be fresh or salt water are in my opinion one of this earths greatest providers of pleasure and peace. I spent much of my childhood in Japan and the eastern coast of, Maryland. Most of my adult life has been by Lake Michigan. I never tire of the water. I am always overwhelmed by its power and majesty. I like Wallace Steven's quote, “Human nature is like water. It takes the shape of its container.”  When I am by water I become the best version of myself because I know God's love for me is more vast and powerful than all the earth's water harnessed. In fact, He created the water for me. When I stand and take in its awesome wonder I realize my potential is limited to what I give myself to; and I gave my self to God.... the God of this universe that with a few words created that water. What could He do with me if I showed unrestrained courage and operated in unwavering faith?

   I thought this was nice. We were there to celebrate the day we were married, September 22, 1989; Sandusky helped us commemorate that. This clock keeps perfect time and the date is changed everyday. 

   This picture does not do justice to how lovely this raised floral garden with fountain and statue really is. I like how it is perfectly placed lining up with the county courthouse.

   This is a close up of the statue of the boy with the leaking boot. Apparently, there are several of these around the country and here is a little history on that if you would care to read it.

   Water and fish make a perfect day for us.

   Sigh, swoon, dream.

Pumpkin Pancakes and a bit more.

   Years ago I discovered a little store called, Aldi. I will confess that I have never liked the soap or any cleaning products from that store, but there are a number of wonderful grocery products there that I find to be as good as the well known brand name products ~ and some I like much better than those higher priced items. There are blogs that offer good tips on using that store. This particular blog gives a monthly menu and then some. This is a good article to look at on yet another blog. You do not have to look far to find plenty of ideas for the Aldi products. Ariel at the blog called Food Lush, posted this little article about their Beer Bread Mix. On the same blog Erica posted this, and Julie posted this.  A few years after I discovered Aldi while visiting my daughter in Germany, I had the opportunity to shop in one in their country homeland, Germany. Aldi is a German based store. Let me just say it was full of so many more products than the stores I shopped in stateside. Today, our Aldi stores are more like the one I shopped in Germany. Gourmet cookies and cakes, imported wines and so many other lovely products line the shelves. No, this is not an Aldi commercial, just a great find I have enjoyed for years I thought I would share, and a segue into my post today. Pumpkin!

   Earlier today Jon went to Aldi to buy white rice, maple syrup, shredded cheese, green peppers and onions. He also managed to buy Krinkle Cut Sea Salt Sweet Potato Chips, Butternut Squash soup and these........ 

Pumpin Bagels and Spiced Pumpkin Fall Harvest Salsa

Such a good man!!! I had the Aldi's Pumpkin Cream Cheese Spread in the refrigerator, and on that half bagel I snagged and toasted ~ YUM! I had never had the salsa so I tried it with the Sweet Potato Chips ~ oh yeah!! 

   And now to the recipe and reason for this post, my favorite Pumpkin Pancakes. I found this recipe some time ago on allrecipes.com where you can see this recipe here. These pancakes are moist yet light and full of pumpkin flavor without being overpowered by the spices. This is an autumn worthy Pumpkin Pancake recipe. I make enough to have leftovers to freeze. They are delicious when toasted, just pop them in the toaster frozen and they are great.

Pumpkin Pancakes

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups milk

1 cup pumpkin puree

1 egg

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

2 tablespoons vinegar

2 cups all-purpose flour

3 tablespoons brown sugar

2 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon ground allspice

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

1/2 teaspoon salt

Directions:

1.   In a bowl, mix together the milk, pumpkin, egg, oil and vinegar. Combine the flour, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, allspice, cinnamon, ginger and salt in a separate bowl. Stir into the pumpkin mixture just enough to combine.

2.   Heat a lightly oiled griddle or frying pan over medium high heat (I just use butter flavored no~stick Crisco spray). Pour or scoop the batter onto the griddle, using approximately 1/4 cup for each pancake. Brown on both sides and serve hot.

Makes about 12 pancakes.

These are your ingredients.

It was only when I went to put the Ginger in that I realized I had grabbed the Nutmeg instead of the Ginger. Since I had already put the other ingredients away I am going to just insert the Ginger here.

Scrap the Nutmeg above, this is what you want.

Giving the batter a rest for a few minutes makes lighter pancakes!

These are SO good. I just love autumn :-)

   The canned pumpkin is from Aldi's and so is the pure Maple Syrup and the Pumpkin Syrup. I like recipes that use only a portion of the can of pumpkin because I use that remaining in my oatmeal in the morning. Yes indeedy!! 1/2 cup oats, 1/4+ cup pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, 1/4 cup Craisin's, 1cup water; stir, cook, stir again and drizzle real maple syrup. That is not my "go to" breakfast in the autumn, it is my breakfast in autumn. Oh, the oats are from Aldi's. Ald'is Millville Oatmeal is nuttier than that big name brand and any of the private labels in groceries I have had.

Coleen's Best Pancakes Ever

      Last Friday evening while getting ready to turn in for the night I thought I would try a pancake recipe for breakfast that I discovered on Pinterest. I thought we would eat outside since we had been having delightfully cool and sunny days. When I got up and looked out the kitchen door this is what I found.

It had been raining most of the night unbeknownst to me and it was still raining.

Okay, plan B ~ we eat inside.

   The recipe is called Best Pancakes Ever and can be found over at Coleen's Recipes. Please go there as she has gone to considerable length to give good details about two steps in the mixing process that really are important. I will list the ingredients here:

Best Pancakes Ever

3/4 cup milk

2 tablespoons white vinegar 

1 cup all purpose flour

2 tablespoons white sugar 

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 egg

2 tablespoons melted butter

1 teaspoon vanilla

Coleen will tell you she uses 3 tablespoons of sugar and so did I. They were sweet. You could use 2, and I may next time but I do like the kick of sweet with the fermentation of the vinegar and baking soda. These pancakes are very good.

      So I let Jon know breakfast was ready and he shows me this comic.

   I am a cartoon lover and he loves the comics. This one was in his email this very morning and certainly seemed apropos. When we do have pancakes it is at weekend. The last time I posted about a pancake recipe, a dear English woman I know, Barbara, commented on how that pancake recipe looked to be "A real American breakfast..." She is right, they are quite American.

   While eating we talked about how nice the rain sounded and how much like autumn it felt that morning. A few days earlier we had been at a park close to our house that has a river with a small waterfall. It was running slow and low with very little "waterfall". We decided to start our day by going there first. The water was indeed up and running nicely. I thought I would share that. I love rain, and autumn is my favorite season. Autumn begins on the next day and we are off to a great start!

Feed your Faith

   In order to receive the promises of God we must believe they are true, and we must trust God. In order to believe God for them we have to know God, and know what His Word says about His promises. We must have faith in God and for the promises and blessings.

   Faith is not some mystical emotion or illusion given to or conjured up better by some than others. Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. That kind of confidence, the kind of assurance that believes things are true in the spirit world before they are manifested and seen in the physical world, the kind of faith that walks in a promise before it is seen, the kind of faith that knows the promise God has given in His Word is true even when everything it sees speaks to the contrary comes from an intimate relationship with God. The spirit to Spirit connection and relationship with God is stronger than all five of our senses put together. Yes, God gives us revelation about His Word that speaks into our lives personally, but that revelation comes from spending time, quality time with Him, and in His Word. God's Word and God's will are one and the same. The testaments of the Bible are His Will and Testament to us. Knowledge of that Word develops our faith. Our faith is developed by hearing the message Jesus brought, the message He spoke and displayed on Calvary's Cross. Romans 10:17 says,  So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ. Faith is what will bring those things God already promised and gave us into the physical realm where we will walk in them, and enjoy them. That pleases God.

   We have in us even before we are saved the ability to put "faith" or trust in things, like the elevators we get on for instance, or the chairs we sit on. But remember in Ephesians 2:8 where Paul wrote, For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;...? The whole world would be saved if salvation was based on God's grace because He gave that grace to all men. Those that are saved are saved because they have used the faith of God, not just faith in God. You see when we get to know Him through His Word one of the gifts we receive is faith. When we hear the gospel of Christ we learn about God's love for us and our need for salvation; we acquire some knowledge. The faith to receive Jesus is there because the Word was spoken. Glance back at Ephesians 2:8, that faith we had to receive Christ as our Savior was not of ourself, but a gift of God. That gift comes by hearing the Word of God, about Jesus Christ. Once we are saved we have that faith on the inside of us to believe for and stand on God's Word, His promises, for our lives. And here is one of my all time favorite verses.

But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and manifests through us the sweet aroma of the knowledge of Him in every place.  2 Corinthians 2:14 NASB

Did you catch that? When we have that kind of intimate knowledge of God, He ALWAYS leads us in triumph, and through us He can and will spread Himself to others. If we will honor God, that is where we become that vessel of gold and of silver that God can use to minister salvation and blessing to the world. That makes me want to dance the happy dance!!

   How about you? Do you set aside enough time to have a quality relationship with our amazing God, our Father? It is not a duty, it is a privilege and such a pleasure to do so. I will change you life for the good, forever!

May God give you more and more grace and peace as you grow in your knowledge of God and Jesus our Lord. By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. Wall Builders

   Labor day expresses gratitude and esteem to the workers of the country it is celebrated in, and acknowledges their hand in the prosperity, strength, and the success of that country. Tomorrow is Labor Day here in the USA and I wanted to share one of my favorite websites with you. The organization’s name is, Wall Builders. What is written below I took straight off of their website. I hope you will visit that site and be inspired to put what you find there to use in some way for our country.

Faithfulness

“Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or else make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for a tree is known by its fruit.”  Matthew 12:33

   God wants us to have our Light, Jesus, shine before men. Why? Because that is God’s calling card to the unsaved world. It is very important that through time with God and time in His Word we get to know Him so we can develop His character in ourselves. There are plenty of Christians that talk and act one way for people to see, but are not the same on the inside. Jesus addressed this issue in Matthew.

  The true gospel that Paul talks about in Romans 1:16, the gospel that has the power of God to save people is about peace, goodness, love, kindness and mercy, grace and the forgiveness of God.  It is about all of the good news, blessing, that came to mankind through the finished work of Jesus on the cross. It is important that once someone gets past the “good fruit” they see on the outside is the same fruit they will taste when they get to know us.

   The King James Version is the only version or translation of the Bible that I am aware of that uses the word “faith” in Galatians 5:22. I am going to stop here and do a little nuts and bolts work.  While the King James Version does use the word “faithfulness” in the Old Testament, they did not use it at all in the New Testament. The Old Testament was translated from the Hebrew, the New Testament from the Greek. Since the fruit of the Spirit is a part of our life in Christ and the verse and word we are talking about is in Galatians, I will stick to the New Testament and the Greek here. The olde English that was used to translate the word to ”faith” in Galatians 5:22 is by Vines¹ dictionary actually the word “faithfulness”. You will find this again in Romans 3:3.

Romans 3:3 For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect?

Amplified Version

Romans 3:3 What if some did not believe and were without faith? Does their lack of faith and their faithlessness nullify and make ineffective and void the faithfulness of God and His fidelity [to His Word]?

Romans 3:3 Is not talking about God’s faith (though there is a lot to be studied and learned on that subject), it is talking about the faithfulness of God. That verse is saying that just because we are tempted and can fall into unbelief (which is a different than lack of faith), God and His Word will remain faithful.  This verse is often cross referenced to 2 Timothy 2:13;

2 Timothy 2:1If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.

New King James Version

2 Timothy 2:1 If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself.

Romans 3:3 is talking about God not denying Himself, not being untrue, but being faithful.

   Love is listed as a fruit of the Spirit, the first one in fact. Love is the force behind everyone of the fruit of the Spirit. They are the characteristics of God, and God is love. So lets look at that “love” chapter.

1 Corinthians 13:7 ...bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Love endures all things. Yes, that refers to patience but endurance is faithful. As we read above in 2 Timothy 2:1, God is faithful.

We will leave it there. The fruit of the Spirit is;

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23

Faith comes out of your Spirit. Faithfulness (though a part of the reborn nature in your Spirit) is in you behavior.

God gives every man a measure of faith.

For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith. Romans 12:3

Faith is a gift of the Spirit, not a fruit of the Spirit.

There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills. 1 Corinthians 12:4-11

Faith is developed by hearing, reading the Word of God.

So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Romans 10:17

Our faith unifies the body of Christ.

...till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; Ephesians 4:13

Our faithfulness draws the world to Jesus.

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:6

God is pleased with our faith in Him.

But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. Hebrews 11:6

God uses the faithful to serve Him.

My eyes shall be on the faithful of the land,

That they may dwell with me;

He who walks in a perfect way,

He shall serve me. Psalm 101:6

   After having broken all of that down to what faith is and what faithfulness is, I will now make the statement I did not want to make before I laid all of that out. In its essence, faith does mean faithfulness. When we choose to stand in and walk in faith, we are being faithful. Certainly we need to trust (faith) to be diligent (faithful). When our faith begins to waiver it is patience (endurance) that undergirds our faith to get us through until we receive the answer we are believing for. Remember the verse above, Hebrews 11:6?  Faith pleases God and those walking in faith will diligently seek Him. This does please God and here is one of promises that comes through faith and being faithful (diligent) because of that faith.

A faithful man shall abound with blessings, but he who makes haste to be rich [at any cost] shall not go unpunished.  Proverbs 28:20

   I realize there are those that have a problem with other brothers and sisters in the body of Christ that talk about God’s blessings and promises and the abundance of the good life we should have. I am not talking about the worldly wealth. I am not talking about scheming or trying to do some “good works” or anything else other than just receiving what God has given His children. I am not talking about greed, or what some seem to like calling the “blab it and grab it”, or “name it claim it” behavior. I am talking about what Jesus said about “believe and receive”  in Mark 11:24 "Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them." We accepted Jesus by faith and through grace, and we don’t look back or question that miraculous gift. That is how we receive every blessing He promised us ~ finances, health, peace, simply prosperity in every area of our lives. God from the beginning has been trying to bless us. When God was ready to create man He declared that we would have dominion over everything. Two verses later when man drew His first breath, God blessed him and told him to be fruitful and multiply. That phrase includes having children, but it refers to being fruitful altogether. God gaves us everything and it was all good, very good. We own this place if we will just have faith in God for it that shows up in our faithfulness.

God is faithful and his promises and covenant to us were unconditional. God just wants children to have a relationship with and children He can bless. If we are faithful in that relationship we will do as Proverbs 28:20 says and abound with blessing.

   When we have developed the fruit of faithfulness in our life we will be ever aware of God’s constance presence, which will be the fellowship we enjoy that gives us His joy and our strength. We can then be good stewards over our time, our bodies, our families, our finances, our belongings, over all He has given us. And let’s not forget what we read in Psalm101:6. God gave us dominion over this earth and He needs us to take care of it and serve Him in it. We need to be faithful to do that. On top of which, in these last days God needs us to be faithful so that He can shine out, so He can be manifested and be seen by those that need Him.

   I love watching and experiencing the Holy Spirit take me from one level of faith to the next, one victory to the next as I spend time with God. I can see areas of growth in my life and areas where I need to be more faithful. Are there area’s you see in your life that you are strong in your faith and walk in faithfulness? Are there areas that more time with God developing your faith as you are in the Word, and being faithful in your relationship with Him could help you overcome something you have been struggling with? God is faithful and will do whatever it is in your life you need. I would love hear about either, or both.

For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.” Romans 1:17
